The North Carolina State Fair

12:36 PM

Living in Chapel Hill proves once again to be the most perfect location, especially for this time of year. The state fair is just a bit of a drive (35 minutes away) and we get to avoid the traffic and the chaos that comes with the State Fair from this distance. There are only two days left for the State Fair so if you haven't already gone, you definitely should!

Here are some food suggestions and general tips I have if you plan on going.

The Food You Have to Try

Food at the state fair is expensive. But, this kind of fried food extravaganza backdropped by fair lights only comes once a year! I'm including the prices for my favorite items so you can go prepared. Take cash with you! There are ATMS but they'll charge you $3.95 to withdraw money.

Wisconsin Cheese Jalapeno Cheddar ($8): This seriously is the best thing at the fair (IMO). Warm, gooey, fried goodness. YUM.

Fried oreos & Blooming Onion ($5, $8): Get the blooming onion with a bunch of friends. Joe and I couldn't finish the entire thing, just too much onion for me..

Roasted corn($4): A serious fair classic. Best part is seasoning it with whatever you want!

Turkey Leg($9.75): No better way to feel awesomely cool than chowing down on a gigantic turkey leg!

Some other suggestions I heard but just didn't have the money nor the room in my stomach to try: Fried cheesecake, apple dumplings, Krispy Kreme Burger

Other Tips

  • Try to look for free parking! They are available, you'll be spending a lot of $$ on the rides, food, and games. Best to save what $ you can :)
  • Dress warmly (if you're going at night) and in comfortable shoes
  • Take at least $40 cash with you
  • The ferris wheel costs $6/person. Make sure to keep track of the money you're spending so you don't miss out on anything you wanted to do!
